Charcoal / Carbon is a commodity liable to spontaneous combustion and is classified 4.2 (substances liable to spontaneous combustion) in the IMDG Code and other modal dangerous goods regulations. The spontaneous combustion of Charcoal may cause a fire in a container.
Is activated carbon non hazardous?
Chemical stability:Stable under normal conditions. Possible hazardous reactions:None under normal processing Conditions to avoid:Incompatible Materials. Ignition sources, dust generation, moisture, excess heat.
Is charcoal good for soil?
Charcoal increases the soil’s ability to hold onto plant nutrients and beneficial soil microbes by slowing or reducing the leaching of nutrients by rain or watering. The low density of charcoal lightens heavy soils, which allows better root growth, increasing drainage and allowing air into the soil.

You can reuse your old charcoal! Look for the bigger chunks and remove as much ash as possible before reuse. Store your old charcoal in a dry spot. When using old charcoal, you will need to include some new charcoal in the combustion mixture.
How is charcoal created?
Charcoal is normally obtained from the burning of wood, peat, bones, cellulose, or other carbonaceous substances with little or insufficient air. It is an amorphous carbon in the form of highly porous microcrystalline graphite. When charcoal is used as an additive to clay, it can help save energy in brick production.
Is charcoal powder flammable?
Charcoal has a strong affinity for moisture, and not oxygen, at ordinary temperature. Pulverized merchant charcoal contains about 15 per cent of water, and with this amount of moisture will readily ignite a strong spark.
Is activated charcoal explosive?
May form combustible dust concentrations in air. All powdered activated carbons are weakly explosive.
Can I ship charcoal?
The material as offered for shipment should have been sufficiently heat-treated and should be cooled down to ambient temperature before packing. The Association advises their Members to take the necessary precautions and consult the IMDG Code when shipping charcoal or cargoes with similar product names.
